say NO to SHAHTOOSH!

This is a story of beauty turned ugly. A story of a species turned fashion victim. A story of murder and subterfuge on the roof of the world. This is the story of shahtoosh.

Shahtoosh means the 'King of Wools' in Parisian- a perfect description for an ultra fine wool that’s known for its extraordinary lightness, its delicacy and its unbelievable warmth.

They sell for $1,000 to $5,000 and more, and have become the rage among the rich, famous, and fashionable. Movie stars wrap newborns in them, socialites drape them over ball gowns, and a Hong Kong tycoon dines with one in his lap.

Shahtoosh owes its “royal” status to the light delicate hair from which it is woven. The coat of the endangered Tibetan antelope, or chiru, contains some of the world’s finest hair, which is around 6 times thinner than the average human hair. That’s a very fine hair!.. They are so fine that even a large shawl can be pulled with ease through a finger ring, giving it its other name “ring shawl”.

In order to collect the fine hairs, These beautiful animals have to be SLAUGHTERED!.. Because each hair needs to be individually plucked from the skin. Thus the animals are hunted down and KILLED!

Just imagine, three to five animals are killed for every shahtoosh shawl sold!

The Chirus now are in serious danger, and are facing a very real threat of extinction—for the sake of fashion. No matter how wealthy you are, if you buy a shahtoosh shawl you’ll be the reason why three of these beautiful animals lost their lives.

Shahtoosh, the epitome of elite luxury, has blood on it. Some may take pride in owning one, but there is really no pride once you know the true cost of these blood shawls.

Luckily, more and more high profile celebrities have realized that wearing a shahtoosh shawl is harmful to their reputation. Some have even joined campaigns against the sale of these shawls.

Of course, some do know but don’t care. The human desire for luxury often gets in the way of what’s right and proper. As long as people are willing to feed their selfish attitudes, the trade in shahtoosh shawls will continue... but only for as long as the Tibetan Antelope exists, which there will be no more in just 3 years!.

The alternative?.. Mookerjee, a senior director with the New Delhi-based Wildlife Trust of India, believes that the pashma shawl, is the perfect alternative, as the traditional weavers in India’s Kashmir state are highly qualified and is producing a legal, high-quality hand-woven pashmina that will soon become internationally recognized.

Major brands already started producing tissue- like fine, baby-skin soft, 100% kashmiri wool shawls. They come in every shade of color imaginable: My sister bought light purple, and mustard yellow. I ordered deep red and sky blue.. They are just amazing, you can wear them guilt-free.

Final note to girls still insisting on buying Shahtooshs: Know that since it is now banned to trade in Shahtoosh in most countries- (recently also in UAE), most of the shawls being sold are fake. “Very often, the shahtoosh sellers do not even give genuine shahtoosh to their customers,” Mookerjee said, “It is mixed with pashmina or other materials.”.. And no one is the wiser !

So, if you are not concerned in saving baby chirus, save your money then as no Shahtoosh shawls are genuine any more!

PLEASE, say NO to SHAHTOOSH!!!

Wet Cement :-(

I was visiting a friend at the hospital and desparately looking for a place to park my car when i finally saw a couple with their little daughter coming out of the building. So i decided to follow them slowly with my car to take their parking space.

The little girl was about 4 years old and she was clearly upset, and the father was clearly annoyed with her. She was crying, the poor thing, while her father held a tight grip on her arm and was dragging her along with him. The mother just didn't bother with the scene and just walked along casually.

The girl wouldn't stop crying and the father at some point just lost it and hit her hard on the back!

I gasped! What is he doing?! .. And what most angered me was the careless mother who didn't even stop to look twice at what just happened!!

"Ok, calm down, he's her father and he knows best. Maybe it was just this once to get her moving", just as i was telling myself that, I see that they had already reached their car. The mother nonchalantly opens the door of the front seat, while this cruel cruel father open the back door, picks up the little girl and literally DUMPS her on the back seat. THEN, he proceeds to HIT HER MERCILESSLY, over and over and over And again, he just WOULDN'T STOP!!!.. And the mother seemed completely NOT bothered by what's going on!!!.. I was HORRIFIED.. I just found myself shouting at him " bass.. BAASS.. eKFAYA, 7ARAM 3LAIK" !!!

And the strangest thing happened, while the father stopped dead in his tracks looking abit ashamed, the zombie mother turned her head and looked at me, eyes shooting daggers, face all red with indignation, and gesturing to me "Enti eshtabeen!".... Wow, she was capable of showing emtions after all !!

Now ana kheft :-/ ra7at ilSakra o yat ilFikra.. So like a coward, I sped off.. To hell with their parking space!!

Clarification from AlOthman

Some of you may already remember how confused and upset I was when I travelled to London to see that the dress I had just bought a week ago from 'AlOthman' is being sold for less than half the price in Selfridges. (for full story, read here)

Unfortunately, the initial shock of 800 kd price difference made me forget to take a picture of the dress with its price tag, and when I returned the next day to Selfridges it was already sold, so I had no proof of what I saw!

'AlOthman' management- ma gassaraw, promised to investigate the matter. They contacted Temperley London, and folks, the mystery is finally resolved.

They emailed me the formal clarification from Temperley and it states the following:

"Further to reading the blog http://gold-shoes.blogspot.com/, I was concerned to see that somebody had been able to purchase ( The Goddess Dress) from Selfridges for 1398 pounds. This dress has a retail price of 2500 pounds and is Temperley classic which means it is never marked down in sales.

Having spoken to Selfridges, I discovered that the dress had the incorrect ticket price printed through anentering error on their part. This now has been amended and re printed. I would like to apologize for any confusion this may have caused. The customer who bought the dress was in the right place at the right time!

Kind regards;

Marry Temperley- Commercial Director"

Isn't that one customer lucky or what ?!!!

***Special thanks goes to AlOthman for following up on my complaint. Your professionalism is much appreciated. Thank you Mr. Rashad.

One morning..

I was in my car, waiting for the red light to turn green. I look up at the rear view mirror, and there behind me sitting in her car, this very beautiful girl.

She looked really pretty, with black 7ijab framing her perfect face. Ok, sij kanat 7a66a abit too much makeup for morning time- black lined eyes with cherry red lips, but there was no denying her beauty.

What bothered me was this big black car next to her with these two men practically half out of the window in an attempt to get her attention.

Why couldn't they leave the poor girl alone?.. Can't they see she's mt7ajba o ga3da tikana 7etta ma eltaftat 3laihom??

And just while I was thinking that, this poor tikana girl started DANCING!!.. La o dancing min gulb b3d!!.. You can imagine my shock as I watched in horror how she began shoulder shaking, hand waving, neck popping as if no one else was around.

And here I was feeling sorry for her, while she was obviously enjoying, no not enjoying but rather SEEKING the attention of fellow men drivers.

Apparently, when I first saw her, she was just waiting for the song to start!

The light turned green, and I sped off in disgust at how some girls just don't respect the 7ijab they are wearing.

Dishdasha Couture?!

I was skimming through this old magazine when I came across this article. It says here that Sheikh Majed AlSabah will join forces with renowned designer Tom Ford to design dishdashas!!

I quote: "While many in the West mistakenly believe that all Arab men dress alike, Ford and Al Sabah know differently. They understand that the dishdasha has every bit as much variety in quality, cut and price as the Western suit. To the Arab men, the thobe or national dress is the epitome of comfort, elegance and style. ...

It is highly versatile, with many variations. In the UAE, the nationals prefer tarboosh on their round- neck dishdasha. In Kuwiat, the dishdashaheatures a high chinese collar, while Qataris prefer to wear their national dress with long, pointed collars.

These days, it's possible to have a whole selection of all these styles irrespective of where you hail from. And while most Arab men prefer their dishdashaswhite or beige, shades of black and brown are popular during winter, and there are many other colours and styles to choose from.

So there is plenty of room for Ford and AL Sabah's bespoke- couture, even- service to manoeuvre in the lucrative and highly affluent Middle Eastern market"

They even had this sketch which displays where Ford will add his magical touches.

  1. Collar: Choice of spread or two button Mandarin collar.
  2. Tom Ford's initials on the front pocket.
  3. Sleeves: Choice of barrel or French cuff.
  4. Hand-stiching throughout- side pockets and hem.

- Alef magazine, Autumn 2007

Well I have to say this isn't the first time I hear about this idea, but it is the first time i've heard about this partnership. I do recall Awatif Al7ay once mention in an interview along time ago that she will revolutionize the dishdasha !!-Eewww *cringing*.. Also, i did recieve an email a while back with different images of hip dishdashas..

First day of year

I woke up this morning feeling nothing special, only when i remembered it's the first day of a new year I was hit with a sudden jolt to start working on my resolutions..

This year I want to:

1. Control my emotions as much as i can. Be more calm, more serene. Mako shy ystahel a7rig dammy 3alashaanah. Count backwards from 10 before reacting.. I hope that'll work!

2. Akhtim alQuran 6 times this year: once every two months, a 7izb a day --> doable, right? .. We'll see.

3. Go 3omra.

4. Start working out more. Renew my subscription @ "Flex". Go atleast 3 times a week. And stick to the program this time.

5. Buy a fine piece of expensive jewellery. Something really exquisite. Something significant I can pass on to my children.

6. Not to hesistate buying what I like. That patent Chloe bag didn't wait for you to make up your mind and was snatched right before your eyes.

7. Pamper myself more, go to massages/ facials atleast once a month.

8. Redocerate.

9. Wear my seatbelt when i drive.

10. Throw a big lavish party for no reason other than to have fun and dance all night.

11. Cook something. Making a sandwich or Fridge-Cake do not qualify. Must use oven!

12. Keep in touch with everyone I care about. Thank you Shoush!
